Republicans on rape and abortion

Maybe you've heard Rep. Todd Akin, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Missouri, comments on whether a women can get pregnant from rape. If not, here is the quote,

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,... If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

That quote is related to the new Republican mainstream position of no exceptions to rape and incest regarding abortion. By the way, this is not the first insanely stupid comment by a Republican that when a woman is raped, her body internally stops a pregnancy. In 1988, Pennsylvania state representative Stephen Freind said this about what happens when a woman gets raped. It causes her "to secrete a certain secretion” that generally kills sperm.

Rachel Maddow shows this radical right-wing position on abortion exceptions to rape is now the new normal for the Republican Party. She cites everyone from Akin above to Sarah Palin to now Republican vice presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, have supported this radical position.
