Stephen Colbert's hilarious take on Rick Santorum's idiotic comments regarding high school student protests

Stephen Colbert was on fire Monday night. In the second part of his monologue, he covers former Senator and conservative Rick Santorum's idiotic comment that the high school protesters should do something else than protesting over gun violence. You see he wanted them to learn CPR. The problem is the students were doing what our Constitution wants us to do. Redress government. Get them to pass legislation to address a problem. Santorum, you are an idiot. Colbert then covers Trump's inability to get a lawyer to represent him and channels his inner Sinatra. Great stuff. Than you Stephen for helping us cope with a fascist in the White House.

Former CIA chief says under Trump, "Our future is in jeopardy."

Former CIA director John Brennan told MSNBC's Morning Joe that under conservative President Trump that, "Our future is in jeopardy." That's based on Trump's ignorance, lack of integrity and dishonesty. Brennan also said Trump was mean spirited. Yeah, all of that is true. (MSNBC video below at the 2 minute mark.) Brennan also says that Russia may have something on Trump. (Five minute mark) I agree. What else could explain why Trump fawns over Russian president Vladimir Putin. Of course, Brennan being former CIA chief, probably has more inside knowledge than most Americans. And one more thing. Check out Brennan's tweet below in response to the firing of FBI agent Andrew McCabe. I love it when he says that "America will triumph over you." Let's hope so.

Brennan's response to Trump's hateful tweet celebrating McCabe's termination.

Conservative President Trump is tepid on Russian nerve gas attack

Republican President Trump is weak when it comes to condemning Russia for a nerve gas attack on an ex-spy Russian spy in England. This use of a military class nerve gas not only critically hurt its intended target but also effected a British policeman and the possibly the town of Salisbury. (BBC News) Instead of strongly criticizing Russia, the conservative Trump said "It certainly looks like the Russians were behind it." (CNN tweet and video below) It looks like they were behind it? Trump, you are clearly compromised by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead of addressing the nation that our ally was attacked and that we will assist Great Britain in response, you hedge on it. Somewhere Republican Ronald Reagan is spinning in his grave. Intelligence expert Malcolm Nance made a forceful argument on what Trump should do when he appeared on MSNBC's 11th Hour. Check out the Nance's powerful statement in the video below.

Stephen Colbert on Rex Tillerson's firing

You can't make this stuff up. Conservative President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by Twitter. We need Stephen Colbert to do some comedy on this. He also covers the GOP House of Representatives conclusion that there was no conclusion between Russia and the Trump campaign and Russia's nerve gas attack on a former spy living in England. Hilarious monologue below. We need the laughs in these dark times.

Farce. Betsy Devos to lead commission on keeping schools safe from guns

In one of the most ridiculous moves by conservative President Trump, he is tasking Education Secretary Betsy Devos to lead a commission on protecting students from gun violence. USA Today. Really? That's like asking Dr. Nick from The Simpsons to operated on you. Just recently, she has had some disastrous interviews. One of them was with 60 Minutes. Here's a partial exchange with reporter Lesley Stahl on school choice and public schools in Michigan, her home state.

Stahl: “Have you seen the really bad schools? (Refering to public schools) Maybe try to figure out what they’re doing?” Stahl asked.

Devos: “I have not,” DeVos confessed. “I have not. I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming.”

Huffington Post

Back to guns and schools. From what we know she touts Trump's wild west fantasy. Arm teachers. At her confirmation hearing, she cited the need of school personal to have guns because some schools might be threatened by grizzly bears. It's so crazy that last year Stephen Colbert ran a skit imagining a bear as a student in school We've got to laugh or else it's just tears. Check out the hilarious skit below. Oh and just remember, Devos needed Vice President Pence to break a tie to confirm her. You guessed it. Conservative Republicans supported her.

Vote liberal Democrat if you want to live.

High school students: Trump lied to you

There are many high school students who are fighting for a safe environment where they will not be shot by an assault rifle. They're not just fighting for themselves but all of us. Last month, conservative President Donald Trump met with survivors of Parkland High School shooting, and representatives of the Columbine and Sandy Hook massacres. But one student stood out with his emotional and intellectual argument for gun control. Sam Zeif. He questioned why we let weapons of war onto our streets and into our schools. He then cited one country that has passed gun control legislation. Australia. And he forcefully told the President of how many mass killings that country has had since their last mass murder. The answer is zero. (News.com.au)

Then there was a remarkable meeting with members of Congress. Trump in full con-man mode discussed taking away guns from dangerous people before a hearing. Something that a liberal might propose. He challenged Republican members to look for solutions and not be afraid of the NRA. He indicated he was not afraid of them. But after a later meeting with the NRA, Trump shows us who he is. He's all talk and a con-man. He doesn't have the guts to take them on or he's so beholden to them that won't do the right thing. Ban assault rifles. Universal back ground checks. He is touting the NRA's line. The wild idea of arming teachers. Huffington Post

Dear high school students. No more meeting with conservative Republicans. They are not listening to you. There's one political movement that believes in doing something about gun violence. Liberals. Vote liberal Democrat if you want to live. Flip the House and Senate. Impeach Trump for Russia collusion and a multitude of scandals.

Guilty Pleasures: Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985) is a movie with a terrible name. I don't know why they didn't name it after the book that was the source material called "The Destroyer" by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. Fred Ward plays a New York city cop who's recruited to be an assassin for a top secret organization that fights government corruption. Unfortunately, he's given the name Remo Williams as an alias. Full of great action and humor , it's quite entertaining. Excellent make-up for Joel Grey who plays the Korean Chiun. Love that action set piece at the Statue of Liberty. And remember this line from the movie, it's called the Eleventh Commandment. "Thou shall not get away with it."

New Topic for the Basement Blog: Guilty Pleasures

I'm adding a new topic to this Blog. It's going to be called "Guilty Pleasures." It 's going to be posts about stuff that gets criticized by the media or people but I like. Most of these items will be movies but who knows. It could include other things.

Congratulations Alexandre Desplat

Yesterday, composer Alexandre Desplat won the Oscar for best score for his work on The Shape of Water. His music is a wonderful, beautiful fusion of jazz and French impressionism. It simply teleports you to another place and time for this bizarre but well told romantic tale. Congratulations Alexandre Desplat. Here's the piece Elisa's Theme from the film.

John Oliver on NRA TV

I'll admit that I have not watched NRA TV. Hey, I would rather play Skyrim. So, I'm glad that John Oliver of HBO's Last Week Tonight did watch it. His hilarious piece showed that the NRA not only celebrates guns but anger, hatred and death. It's funny because these NRA people love their guns like well, a significant other. Check out Emmy winner Oliver's funny piece. Warning, there's cussing.

The Best Film of the Year for 2017

For the two of you who read this blog, it's now time for The Basement Blog Best Film of the Year for 2017. I know all in Hollywood is waiting for this announcement so let's get to it. The nominees are The Disaster Artist, The Post and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Drum roll please. Um... I forget this is a blog post not a TV ceremony Sorry. The winner for the Basement Blog Best Film of the Year is...

THE POST.

These are dark times. President Trump has called the news media the enemy of the people. He attacks them constantly. And we know why. He wants to cover up the truth about his presidential campaign's collusion with Russia. Thankfully, the Founding Fathers wrote into the First Amendment protections of the press. If the government won't tell the truth then the press will. The Post is a reminder that "democracy dies in darkness." Go see this film if you have not already. And come November vote those who would hide the truth out of office.

Colbert: Trump is coming for your guns!!!

Yesterday, conservative President Trump had a dog and pony show meeting with congressional leaders over gun violence. And amazingly he seemed to back common sense gun control. Universal back ground checks. And taking guns away from dangerous people before a hearing is held. What the ????!!! Of course, this being Trump and remembering another recent meeting about DACA which didn't go anywhere, we should take Trump's concerns about gun violanec e with a grain of salt. We need Stephen Colbert to make sense of it. Check out his funny video below.

Colbert takes on the conservative Republican who is a Nazi

In the piece below, Stephen Colbert takes a look at the Nazi who is running for Congress as a Republican. He points out that racists and Nazis are attracted to the Republican party. Folks, you see racists and Nazis in the conservative Republican Party. You don't see the racists in the Democratic Party. Don't believe this liberal? Remember KKK leader David Duke who ran for governor on the Republican ticket? How about the time the Trump campaign selected a White nationalist as a delegate? (Mother Jones) Or Trump's calling African nations "shi*holes" and wanting more immigration from white Norway. Of course, racism in the Republican Party goes back to the Southern strategy which was designed to appeal to white racists in the South to deliver those southern states to vote GOP in presidential elections. (Wikipedia)

Remember. Vote liberal Democrat if you want to live.
