New Topic for the Basement Blog: Guilty Pleasures

I'm adding a new topic to this Blog. It's going to be called "Guilty Pleasures." It 's going to be posts about stuff that gets criticized by the media or people but I like. Most of these items will be movies but who knows. It could include other things.

Congratulations Alexandre Desplat

Yesterday, composer Alexandre Desplat won the Oscar for best score for his work on The Shape of Water. His music is a wonderful, beautiful fusion of jazz and French impressionism. It simply teleports you to another place and time for this bizarre but well told romantic tale. Congratulations Alexandre Desplat. Here's the piece Elisa's Theme from the film.

John Oliver on NRA TV

I'll admit that I have not watched NRA TV. Hey, I would rather play Skyrim. So, I'm glad that John Oliver of HBO's Last Week Tonight did watch it. His hilarious piece showed that the NRA not only celebrates guns but anger, hatred and death. It's funny because these NRA people love their guns like well, a significant other. Check out Emmy winner Oliver's funny piece. Warning, there's cussing.

The Best Film of the Year for 2017

For the two of you who read this blog, it's now time for The Basement Blog Best Film of the Year for 2017. I know all in Hollywood is waiting for this announcement so let's get to it. The nominees are The Disaster Artist, The Post and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Drum roll please. Um... I forget this is a blog post not a TV ceremony Sorry. These are dark times. President Trump has called the news media the enemy of the people. He attacks them constantly. And we know why. He wants to cover up the truth about his presidential campaign's collusion with Russia. Thankfully, the Founding Fathers wrote into the First Amendment protections of the press. If the government won't tell the truth then the press will. The Post is a reminder that "democracy dies in darkness." Go see this film if you have not already. And come November vote those who would hide the truth out of office.

i know we haven't done our film awards in a couple years, but we're back! It's time for the Basement Blog Science Fiction Film of the Year for 2017. The nominees are Logan, Blade Runner 2049, and The Shape of Water. And the winner is...

um.... just kidding. it's a little Moonlight moment there.

The winner is Blade Runner 2049. It's an excellent science fiction film noir that explores what it means to be human.

Colbert: Trump is coming for your guns!!!

Yesterday, conservative President Trump had a dog and pony show meeting with congressional leaders over gun violence. And amazingly he seemed to back common sense gun control. Universal back ground checks. And taking guns away from dangerous people before a hearing is held. What the ????!!! Of course, this being Trump and remembering another recent meeting about DACA which didn't go anywhere, we should take Trump's concerns about gun violanec e with a grain of salt. We need Stephen Colbert to make sense of it. Check out his funny video below.

Colbert takes on the conservative Republican who is a Nazi

In the piece below, Stephen Colbert takes a look at the Nazi who is running for Congress as a Republican. He points out that racists and Nazis are attracted to the Republican party. Folks, you see racists and Nazis in the conservative Republican Party. You don't see the racists in the Democratic Party. Don't believe this liberal? Remember KKK leader David Duke who ran for governor on the Republican ticket? How about the time the Trump campaign selected a White nationalist as a delegate? (Mother Jones) Or Trump's calling African nations "shi*holes" and wanting more immigration from white Norway. Of course, racism in the Republican Party goes back to the Southern strategy which was designed to appeal to white racists in the South to deliver those southern states to vote GOP in presidential elections.
